Why should I save my teeth?
Saving your natural tooth is a preventive measure that will make a significant difference in the way that you chew, talk, smile, interact with others and spend your money. Natural teeth give a person a more youthful look and self-confidence. Patients who choose not to save their teeth will find themselves with unpleasant results, such as, further tooth loss, advanced gum disease, trouble chewing, TMJ problems, lowered self-confidence and speech problems. In the long-run, saving your tooth will be less expensive then having to go through cosmetic and involved treatment.
What causes tooth loss?
The most common causes of tooth loss are:
• A broken or fractured tooth
• An infection (abscess) of the nerve
• Infected or inflamed gums
• Loose teeth
• A badly decayed tooth
• A lost filling
• A knocked out tooth
How can I save my teeth?
Depending on the particular case, there are many ways to go about saving your teeth:
• If you suffer from a broken tooth, a full crown could be the answer for you. In this case, the dentists will build up the tooth and then place a crown on top.
• If you have an abscessed tooth, root canal therapy has a 95% success rate of saving your tooth, especially when diagnosed and treated early.
• If you have a periodontal (gum) infection, depending on how severe it is, you may have to return to the office for several cleanings and treatments.
• If you have a badly decayed tooth or a lost filling, it can be restored with a new filling.
• If your tooth had been knocked out, you must get to a dentist immediately within 30 minutes so that the tooth can be reimplanted. Put the tooth in low-fat milk to preserve it.
Is it important to save a child’s baby tooth?
Parents often have the misconception that baby teeth do not need to be saved because they will fall out anyway. The health and alignment of the permanent teeth all depend on the health of the baby teeth. Severely decayed baby teeth need to be restored in order to strengthen speech and chewing ability, ensure normal growth of the jaw and to protect the alignment of the baby teeth. top
