Outreach Dentistry in Guatemala
“Guatemala 2010” was a success on many levels. We achieved all our objectives including the care of over 300 children with urgent dental needs; a preventative program involving the application of fluoride varnish and sealants; and a trial clinic in one of the poorest regions of Guatemala, Jutiapa.
Five dental operatories and an examination station were set up in a day in small school in the community El Rosario. 18 Volunteers formed an effective team to children from five nearby communities. This was a remarkable feat considering that most of the team had never worked together before.
Next year’s project looks promising. Preliminary plans have already been made with other health care partners in Guatemala.
